The expert further emphasized that the destruction of these tunnels remains a top priority for Israel’s defense strategy in the ongoing conflict, particularly given Hamas’ reliance on them for command and control operations. Despite airstrikes, artillery, and ground operations targeting the tunnel system, Israeli officials believe that a substantial portion of Hamas’ tunnel network still remains operational, requiring ongoing efforts to eliminate the threat.
Hamas has long relied on these tunnels to conduct asymmetric warfare, and their significance has grown over the years as Israel has strengthened its defenses above ground. The Israeli military has employed advanced technology, including tunnel detection systems, to locate and destroy these tunnels, but the nature of the subterranean warfare has proven challenging.
